Genetic Engineering

We are going to be spending our remaining time this year talking about the ethical concerns around genetic engineering.

Should genetic engineering of human beings be legal?

Do some research about the issue and post the following information in the comments based on what you find:

1. The website address (url) for the source.
2. A brief summary of the information.
3. If this source is in favor of, against, or unclear on it's position on genetic engineering.

Make sure your name is in your comment.

In this article it explains both sides of the debate whether genetic engineering is whats best for us and can stop any further complications from occurring or how these procedures can be unpredictable and might not even help the child before birth but focuses more on the effects and concern of this procedure than the good. The concerns are will these new organism from genetic engineering cause ecological problems, will the new gene effect the host in anyway, is it actually changing anything, and the main argument is are the scientist playing god to try make them 'perfect'.

  2. Genetic engineering of humans should not be legal because we were all made to be different. If we genetically engineer people to be all the same, there would be no diversity. Everybody would be the same boring person. There would also be such thing as gene discrimination. If you don't have perfect genes, people wouldn't really accept you.

this website is talking about how we are playing god when we do that and that is not good. its not safe and it can affect your baby. we should just leave it as it is.

  7. http://10e.devbio.com/article.php?id=172 This article is the Tenth Edition of Developmental Biology by Scott F. Gilberg. It talks about how genetic engineering is not g a good thing. Reasons like "We're playing God", it just not safe in general, we don't what type of things genetic engineering will be used for, and more debatable reasons like that. This article explains further on these factors that make genetic engineering a bad idea.

  11. Genetic Engineering is unsafe. There have been many deaths due to genetic engineering because "the viral vectors that are used to bring the DNA into the cell may cause lethal immune responses or even tumors." Genetic engineering can also cause mutations.

  13. a lot of people believe that genetic engineering should be allowed because we could take out the genes that cause deathly diseases and help humanity not die at least from diseases. Others might also believe that it should be allowed because of the possible intelligence enhancement. They believe that it would improve society by making people smarter and advancing technology that it would benefit us all

  20. http://www.debate.org/opinions/should-human-cloning-be-allowed

When i found this i read the passage and it says that Human Cloning should never be allowed. "When you clone a human being, you take their heart. When you do that, you kill them. So when you clone someone you kill the real them to make more of them. Therefore, it is a bad thing that should not be allowed. All you are doing is killing (murdering) the really one to make similar ones." So in order to follow through with cloning your child you gonna have to die to give your heart to make a clone child of you. Theirs no purpose of cloning your child if you not gonna be around to see your child that looks identical to you.Human cloning should not be allowed.Every person on this planet is meant to be individual. You would strip humanities' greatest thing "INDIVIDUALITY". Why would any one want to take that away? How do you think that Einstein clone would feel. Being probably absolutely CRAP at physics compared to his clone and only living half of his age? There is a movie of this thing a person was going to shoot the clone but ended up shooting the real one! Cloning would be our worst discovery yet. What's the point making someone just like you but probably have a completely different mind. Is this cloning project only for the president or famous people to clone when they have lazy days? How do you think the clone would feel about that? Being used as a lazy day replacement. I know this is pessimistic but so what? This is what's going to happen, criminals can get away killing someone and then cloning them to get a clean get away!!!! for example the human race should not be mess with Although cloning could be used for the better, it could also be used for the worse, terrorists, murders etc could be cloned if it gets in the wrong hands. People and born and die when they do for a reason. Who know's what a clone could be like as well... Do they have feelings? Are they the same as 'non-clones'?? And that's what i think about human cloning.

  21. However, some people do believe that genetic engineering shouldn't be allowed because scientists currently do not understand all of the relationships between genes, meaning that altering genes could have unintended consequences and they probably won't know the cure for it and it would result in more problems than they tried to solve. People might believe that if it's allowed we could save humanity from diseases but scientists don't really know much about it right now and experimenting will result in many risks.

  23. We cant exactly tell what traits need to be changed. With genetic engineering we assume what traits need to be changed because they are good and/or bad. If we change a good trait, we put an individual at a higher risk for contracting a disease.
